Default Replacing Battery disconnecting J selector

I have been told two versions on changing the battery. One, if you disconnect the battery, it locks the J selector in Park, or two, it does nothing to the selector. The manual talks about disconnecting the battery, but gives not reference or guide to the J selector locking once the battery is disconnected. Of course my local Jag dealer will not answer my question, they want me to bring the car in for a battery. Please help.......

Do you need a new battery or are you just asking out of curiosity? If its just to replace it, its easy. Old one out, new one in. Job done.

Why would you need to move the vehicle with the battery out btw?

I believe the gear selector does get locked in Park if you remove the battery. I believe there is a procedure for releasing the gear selector should you need to move the car with a dead battery.

If you need to replace the battery, you will need to reprogram the hand brake. And depending on where you reside (you don't seem to list that), you may have to re-enter radio codes - non issue in NA.

If you need to move the vehicle while the battery is out then you need to put the selector to N before you disconnect the battery (Ign ON, press footbrake and move to N) ... and make sure you don't move the selector back to P.

Thank you for the replies. The battery in the car now needs to be replaced. I had a later model jag with a similar issue and when I replaced the battery it locked in park. I was told, this is a feature that is common on all Jags current years. I need to know how to correct the issue once I put the new battery in.

thanks;

That is certainly not true of the X350 XJ's. I've replaced my battery, as have probably everyone here at least once. Replace the battery, then go through the procedure to reset the parking brake, and re-enter the radio codes (if you live in a region where radio codes need to be entered), and that is it.
