road roar and low rumble
Hi guys,
My XJ has recently become very noisy lots of road roar that wasnt there a few months ago. I have also tuned into a low wah wah rumble that is very noticeable between 50-60 mph and just about noticeable at all other times.
My back p zeros are down to 3 mill and the fronts are about 5 mill but i have noticed that i have the dreaded inner edge front tyre wear ( when i first got the car i had to change the fronts because they were down to the thread on the inner edge) My steering wheel is dead centre so tracking cant be that far out.
Noise is there when in gear or in neutral i was hoping it wasnt a problem with the diff or prop shaft
Anyone else had this?

It sounds to me like classic tire roar. No cure except new tires. The problem presents early, mileage wise, with low profile high performance tires and later with higher profile four season tires irrespective of tire brand.
Four season rubber formulation is more forgiving and many four season brands have an anti noise profile designed into the tread pattern.
Our cars are prone to noise generation with uneven tread ware regardless of tire brand. To get max mileage before tire roar sets in you keep close watch on ware patterns, get regular competent wheel alignment and avoid power drifting and panic braking. Be alert for worn suspension components too.
Usually at this point on this topic you get impassioned testimony on how "I replaced worn out or trashed brand X tires with new brand Z tires and I will never own brand X tires again". Tire brand is usually secondary to the type and condition of the offending tires.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Tarheal,
What do you think is causing the inner edge tire wear on the front ive read on this forum its lower front arms and others have said wheel alignment
I take your point about the tires that it is probably because the tires are new rather than the brand that makes the improvement

Inner edge ware on front tires is usually a simple alignment issue but as long as you have a good man under the car who knows what he is doing it's a good policy to get the suspension components checked out.
Some say, my Jag Serv Writer for instance, inner edge ware is to be expected on XJs no matter how good the alignment. I don't hold with that as it has not been my experience. I think that is the position of the Jag Techs who follow this Forum as well. I get wheels aligned once a year in any case and as required if suspension components have been monkeyed with.
