Default Rotor Retaining Clips

Does anybody know if these Rotor Retaining Clips are actually necessary? I've read on other forums that they're just for holding the rotor on at the factory during assembly. But the manual states that the rotor is held on both the clips and the lug nuts. #6 in the diagram below. Any insight?

They're called stud clips generally, and you're probably better off without them. They can actually keep the wheel from fitting flush to the rotor. They only serve to temporarily hold the rotor against the hub until the caliper and wheel is on at the factory.

You don't need them.
