Default side marker lights...no longer available?

So I noticed three of the four side marker lights on my 04 XJR were out. Simple bulb replacement, right? Nope. All of them had gotten wet, and the sockets are rotten. Like, fall apart rotten. Nice design. I searched here, and many have suffered this issue. I called my local Jag dealer who did some looking and called me back. He said the sockets aren't available separately and you have to buy the whole assembly. Not surprised. But when I asked if the gray socket that the light bulb goes into was included in the assembly, he said no. I was surprised, I told him, because the units I found online did include this part. He got a bit snippy and asked where online I found them, as these were genuine Jaguar parts. Did a little slam on aftermarket parts, and then I asked him his price. Huh. He then told me the parts (ANY of them) were no longer available from Jaguar. I guess you will have to go aftermarket he tells me. Nice.
So, now that my venting is done...anyone else know where to get the stuff I need for this?

Side Marker Light Assembly for 2004 Jaguar XJR

Looks like a sealed, entirely self contained assembly to me.

I dunno. I just got curious and did some Googling. Someone who actually knows something will chime in !

Cheers

It is very common for the aftermarket to take over the supply of parts like this, as the original makers sell to aftermarket suppliers, and others copy the original.

Just buy off the internet, the parts will probably be the same as Jaguar purchased at the time, and will work perfectly well and cost less.

That is the reality of modern motoring !!

Default Broken Clip (Duct Tape to the Rescue) - but not the Q...

So on my 2003 X-Type, the clips holding the side markers all broke, and I replaced them. I was able to get new side markers online with Smoked Lenses instead of that annoying yellow lens, which just looks much better on a black car.

On the 2004 XJR, same dealie - and same original-issue ugly yellow lens covers. The other day I parked the car, got out, and noticed the Driver's side marker hanging off the car and dangling by its wire. The plastic clip to hold it in place is kaput since it won't snap back in securely. So, I put some duct tape behind it (discretely, so it doesn't show) to hold it in place temporarily. I went online to get a pair of replacement lamps with smoked lenses - but I can't find them anywhere - just the ugly yellow ones.

I have a spare smoked side lamp from the X-Type, but those are a tad smaller, and I bet the opening is a different size/shape too - and its a passenger-side unit - not the driver's side which fell off the XJR. Those are also sold as one-piece units, unlike the separate $38 backside and $30 lens cover they sell for the XJR.

Anyone know of a place that has smoked side-markers for an XJ? or do I have to resort to buying a new ugly yellow one and painting over it? (I have both smoked vinyl film and smoked spray-paint which I bought for the X-taillights - and never got around to using.)

Both rear markers were out so I ordered them from ebay. They come with bulb & bulb holder for about $40 each.

When removed the marker from the body, I saw the bulb holder AND the pigtail harness were badly corroded. I couldn't find the pigtail socket separately so I went to ebay. Found an entire harness at Tudos Auto on ebay (http://stores.ebay.com/Tudos-Auto-Pa...p2047675.l2563) for about $50 and snipped off the pigtail sockets.

Cleaned 'em up with electrical contact cleaner and an old toothbrush - almost as good as new. Spliced it into the existing harness and gooped it up with dielectric grease, fitted it all back together. Everything works like before.

What is the best way to get the light out without scraping the paint around it?

I used a small flat blade screw driver to pry the small end out just a tiny bit, then got a plastic scraper under it to hold it out. Once it is out a bit your fingers do all the work.

Dude, my bulb went out on me and I thought it would be hard to replace.

It's the easiest thing ever !!!!

Just pull the light cover up from the bottom, then slide it out towards the front of the car. You might need a flathead screwdriver to help release the clips, but it should not take you more than five minutes to do.

on my 99 xk8 the rear side markers are accessible reaching under the rear bumber. push in clip on end and it will pop out . on the front remove the headlight access panel in the wheel well in front of the tire . turn stearing in oppisite direction of the side your working on to give you more room. once inside same removal as rear .

For owners of an X350, the post below covers many of the sidemarker issues, including sources for the parts:

Medic_186 and wolfpck1, your 1999s are Jaguar factory code X308s, so you'll tend to receive more informed replies in the X308 forum.

As to where to find parts for your Jaguar, check first with forum sponsors Coventry West, SNG Barratt and Jagbits, who offer nice discounts to forum members. For parts only available from Jaguar, try jaguarmerriamparts.com and gaudinjaguarparts.com, the Jaguar dealers in Merriam, Kansas and Las Vegas, Nevada, respectively, who sell original equipment Jaguar parts online at discount prices (often below eBay prices).

Cheers,

Don
