Default starting problems

I'm having trouble getting my car to start. When I turn the key I hear a click and assume it's the starter solenoid, but the starter will not turn over. I have replaced the alternator and battery after a shop checked them and told me they were bad. Car would randomly start for a while, now not at all. It would intermittently flash codes such as, transmission fault, suspension dampner fail, etc. It would flash restricted performance most of the time and check engine all the time......

Since you have replaced the batt and alt, my money is on the starter. Welcome to the site. Help us to help you by telling us what car we are dealing with.

Default voltage regulator

would a bad voltage regulator cause a faulty test reading for the alternator when tested? Where can I test or even find it on the 1999 XJ8???

The vr is part of the alternator.
