Default Steering wheel rub

There is a small diameter copper wire or post between the part of the steering wheel that rotates and the part that’s stationary. It makes a high pitched squeak when I turn the wheel. More of a slight annoyance than anything. Is it supposed to be there for some reason, e.g., electrical conductivity? It’s at the six o’clock position. I can move it with a small screwdriver. Just trying to avoid pulling the steering column apart on a 2004 XJR. Thanks.

No wires should be protruding from your steering wheel.

Not sure how that wire would make a high pitch squeak--could that be a separate issue? There's a well known power steering whine that Jag issued a TSB for, the noise originates in the rack due to a seal but sounds for all the world like it's in the steering column inside the car. The fix is an additive to the p/s fluid. I found that draining and refilling with Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic ATF also solves the noise issue.

Could you post some pictures? I think that they could be helpful.

Thanks!

Best regards,

Here’s a very zoomed in photo of the area between the rotating and stationary parts of the steering wheel. Notice the copper colored pieces that look like the end of a wire or spring. Tha

I can't tell, but those are most likely the brushes for the heated steering wheel. They are not going to be your issue.

Without hearing it, I'm just making a guess, but I would bet the steering whine you hear is covered by this TSB: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/a...266d1294814672

The additive is a small bottle p/n C2S 48887 that you add to the reservoir. Not sure if the additive is still being sold by Jag. It does actually work, but like I mentioned, you can also drain and refill the p/s system with Valvoline MaxLife ATF and it should accomplish the same thing. I prefer the latter because the p/s system tends to run the fluid pretty hot and needs to be changed.
