Default Strange power windows behaviour: 8 time’s the charm!

Hi, 2 power windows (front passenger side and back driver side ) are not working properly on my 2004 XJ. What I find very strange is that they are not working properly in exactly the same predictable way:
=> Pressing down: the window opens a few cms and then stops ; you can however press down again and it will immediately work again and go another few cms down
=> Pressing up: does not work by default ; however it works systematically on the eighth attempt ( regardless of how quickly I press the up switch 8 times) ; then 2 scenarios: either (i) I press less than approx. half a second and I can press up again and it works immediately or (ii) I press longer and the window stops after a few cms, at which point I have to press again exactly 8 times to make it work upward again.

I can’t believe that this systematic behaviour (working on the eighth attempt up) for both problematic windows is random. I have read most threads on power windows and never saw any reference to the magic number 8 unlocking the window.
The good news is that I can always open and close the windows but it is a bit fiddly!

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any possible explanation?

I am guessing I will have to change the regulators (which presumably has some sort of sensor for anti trap purposes?) but wanted to try to understand the problem first. (I would welcome any tip to find a suitable regulator in the UK by the way!)
Also I have tried the reset procedures on each window and it doesn’t change anything sadly.

Many thanks!

The windows are most likely sticking in their tracks, may be able to lubricate. As you noted this kicks in the anti-trap. If I remember correctly try up three times in a row and hold the third. It overrides the anti-trap.

Hi, thanks. I had lubricated all tracks but it didn't help unfortunately. The sequence to unlock the windows (up) is to press the switch exactly 8 times for some reason (ie the normal anti trap unlocking sequence doesn't work).

Fyi, I finally found out what this was. In fact another person experienced the exact same symptoms, which seems to indicate a faulty motor/regulator: https://www.jaguarforum.com/threads/...-raise.140144/
Changed the motor (easier than it looks: 3 torque screws 30 ) and it works well now.
