Default Super v8 portfolio engine knock

Afternoon everyone: I'm needing advice on how to proceed with this. My mechanic seems to only want's to replace with a new engine. No luck so far with that.
For those who have been through this before, what are some other options with price cost? I'm unable to rebuild myself. Matt

Find a used engine from a reputable supplier. Here's an example:

Perform a compression test and +1 find a replacement used engine if motor tests bad.

Matt,
First off, have you confirmed the "new engine" diagnosis?
- Classic bottom end engine knock (eg, rod bearing) would be confirmed by low/no oil pressure
- Your SC 4.2L uses a spring loaded SC drive coupling which can fail and produce a loud knock (remove SC belt; run engine; knock still there?)

The 4.2L is pretty robust. Unless it ran out of oil or overheated, I'd focus on confirming the diagnosis before moving forward...
...BTW, how did this "knock" develop?

Good news is a replacement engine is cheaper than actually fixing a broken one..Much cheaper.

Sorry to read about your problem, it would be nice to hear what happened to result in the "knock" that the mechanic does not want to repair. I would hope some time was spent on diagnosis prior to telling you your motor was shot. Since these are usually very reliable, engine wise, please give some background on our problem.
