Hi all, brand new member here. A month ago I bought a 2007 XJR, my first jag and it. Is. Awesome. I took it in for an oil change today and had the mechanic (a local jag specialist) do an extended inspection as I want to go on a 1500 mile road trip in a few weeks. Just wanted a jag expert to have a look, even though I paid for the pre-purchase inspection and all was good.
The mechanic told me something to watch out for (tranny flush, brake pads have 5-10K more miles on them etc) but the one thing that puzzles me is the supercharger air cooler bypass hose. He said it's bulging and might burst. Yeah... it's $400 to fix. Jags are notorious for spendy repairs but does that sound right for a hose? The other question is what happens if it bursts?? No supercharger or will the car not run at all? I have looked in this forum and search online but really found no help except seeing that the cost of this hose is less than $20. This mechanic is not a dealer but they specialize in British cars, they don't seem shady at all and have excellent reviews on Yelp. Any insight would be great. Thanks, P
I just changed the valley hose on my 07 SV8 so I came across SC bypass hose in the process. This hose connects the SC output manifold which normally dumps air into the charge air coolers, back to the throttle body (which is on the input side of the SC) for cases when full SC boost is not needed. If I recall correctly the butterfly valve allowing air to pass through the SC bypass is controlled by pressure (vacuum) from the SC inlet elbow below the throttle body.
1) No the car will not run if this hose bursts. You'll have unmetered quantities of air (or lack thereof ) being burned in your engine. Best case is really rough operation. Maybe some else on the forum has actual experience.
2) There is some labor involved: induction system needs removed down to the SC outlet. I'm assuming your mechanic is not replacing the two charge air cooler spacers/gaskets, nor the SC inlet to SC gasket. If he is I think you're getting a bargain on labor.
You've probably noticed quite a few forum members work on our own cars so as to make the cost of ownership more bearable. Best wishes with your decision.
How many miles on your XJR?
If the SC bypass hose is bulging and if you decide to embark in its relacement and substantial labor in the valley hose, it may be good to at least carefully inspect the famous cooling hose under the supercharger.
Because a failure of that hose maybe much more catastrophic to your engine if it happens during the trip...
