Default Troubleshooting A/C

2005 vdp with no air. Of course now we have days of 90 degree weather.
The A/C has worker for years but now turning on the Air does nothing.
Cannot hear the compressor running plus I don't really know where it is.
Any pointers to start please.
Thank you.

Once the gas prssure falls below a certain value the system shuts down to protect the compressor as with no gas, (and lubricant is part of that), the compressor will get damaged. When was the last time you had the aircon checked out ?

Probably never. I'll buy a 134a kit tomorrow try it out when the outside temps drop this weekend.
I've done it before on other vehicles so should be good if I can find the low fitting. Thanks for the suggestion.

There's a guy who runs a garage in St. Mary's. Ga., who does repair videos. He strongly urges folks not to use AC cans from the parts store that say it seals leaks. His argument is that the sealant material can gum up narrow passages in the AC system along with the compressor. He argued that shops will not want to evacuate/refill a system with sealant in it as it contaminates their R134 system equipment. Now, it happens to work out to the shop's advantage, but it might also be best for them and you to have it professionally evacuated and refilled. Just a thought.

You don't want a "kit"! Get a real set of AC gauges and then properly troubleshoot the system.

Those crappy units you purchase in the parts stores allows everybody to keep jamming Freon in the system. You need to diagnosis what is going on then fix the problem or problem's then vacuum the system down and make sure it does hold a vacuum then re-gas the system with the proper weight of refrigerant.

Listen to what eliotb said above. NOTHING is to be put in the system EXCEPT refrigerant and the proper weight of oil!! I can not emphasize this enough. No sealants or improved additives to make the system colder. The last thing you want to do is contaminate your system.

I did a couple of write-ups about troubleshooting the A/C and replacing the compressor. The compressor is clutchless, which sometimes confuses the technicians.
That also means you won’t hear the compressor operate.
