Default Typical XJ8 Problems

I just thought I would share my list of common problems and the average mileage or age that they tend to show up at, based on what I have experienced or heard about:

Air suspension starting at 40K compressor failure and front spring failure
Throttle body starting at 70K throttle position sensor failure
Headliner starting at 5 years of age foam backing disintegration
Coolant header tank starting at 50K failure of bleeder nipple
Transmission failure starting at 100K Various modes (lubrication degradation
is the primary suspect)
Transmission pan leak starting at 60K O ring(electronics sleeve), pan gasket
Parking assist failure starting at 60K various causes
Front suspension bushings starting at 70K

Without fluid changes, the chances of transmission replacement rise quickly at 100K miles. I'm only going by what I have read in various forums. I noticed in both of mine that the shift characteristics changed significantly after a fluid change.
That tells me that this fluid may be losing its modifiers to degradation rather quickly. If the modifiers go, the clutch packs don't respond right and this stresses the unit.

i was under the impression that transmission oil is long life and doesn't need replacement unless to address leakage,,

i even heard that the ones replaced trans fluid started to have shifting issues,,

please, advise,,

Tranny oil is long life, but most independent Jaguar shops I know here in the UK recommmend a fluid change around 60k miles. However, I had a Maxda Xedos for 5 years, and took it from 40k to 128k miles without a fluid change and had no problems. I have to say, though, that the pink colour at 40k was a brown colour at 128k.
I also had a Rover 75, and did have a fluid change on that, as it was recommended in the maintenance schedule. Both these cars had a Jatco box, the Mazda a 4 speed, and the Rover a 5 speed. The Jaguar box is ZF, and used by the other European lxury brands BMW, and Mercedes. I'm not sure about Audi.

I think a fluid change at around 60k is a prudent move. To do it properly can be expensive if a proper flush is done to ensure the fluid in the torque converter is replaced, rather than just a drain-down and refill, (plus new filter, of course).

So, I'm just over 60k and planning to do a fluid change. The dealer last year said they usually see leaks about 60k, and recommended waiting until the usual "leak" develops. It's a year later and I plan to do the fluid change soon, even though the "usual leak" never happened.

With that in mind...are there other seals I should plan to replace when I change the fluid? Rear seal or shifter shaft seal?

Thanks,

John

It is normal when replacing fluid and filter, to also replace the seal around the entry point for the TCM wiring connection socket. This is the thing that causes the leak.

Thanks Fraser...I'll make sure to order one with the filter and oil.

I plan to use the high dollar Shell fluid. It hurts, but better to use what they recommend than wonder later!?! I will likely buy the fluid mail order, unless I can talk the dealer into price matching.

VW has the same fluid, much cheaper. Check out their specs.
