What does Nav update do other than the obvious?
Hi
I'm a new owner of a 2004 VDP with factory nav.
Other than updating the maps, are there any other benefits to updating the nav disc? Specifically, what does the "firmware update" that I read about do?
Thanks!

I'd be curious too...as I have a 2012 disk now sitting here.
I did read that one of the updates, from the very early ones was that you can program destinations in on the fly, whereas the early one's locked you out.
*if I could get rid of that silly 'agree' button every time the nav fires up I'd pay for that!

Everything that runs with a computer program, from your Nav unit, to your home computer, to your Blue Ray Player, runs on what is called its "Operating System". This is like "Windows" on your home computer. The Operating System is different than the programs you load on your computer. The Operating System tells your computer how to play that new game you just bought.
Your home computer had the Operating Program software version that was current at the time the unit was made.
Software companies revise and update their software all the time. Periodically if the Operating Program Software is updated, you should update your computer to the new version. If not the new game you just brought home may not work.
This updating the Operating System Software is what "Firmware Update" is referring to. It is updating the basic Operating System software that runs your product.
Updating your maps is like loading the most current version of a game program onto your computer.

Right, I understand what firmware is. But what does this 2011/12 firmware update actually do?
To use your analogy, updating from windows XP to windows 7 brings about significant enhancements in many areas, from graphics to performance to features/functionalities. Does the jag firmware update give you anything extra (enhanced performance, 3D graphics, ability to input destination on the fly like Ross says, offer up different routes, etc.)

Word of caution - I purchased a disk from ebay which screwed my system. I then had to go and buy the original from Jaguar to fix it!!
