Default Wiper problems - stops & starts

Wipers on my 2004 Vanden have had a mind of their own for months. They will stop (park) at the same spot about 11:00 on a clock face. They may stay there for a second and resume or they may stay there for a long time. bump the stick for a quick wipe and they start working again for a varying amount of time.

The problem happens in auto, viarable, slow, fast or momentary (all options). I've had it to a dealer who told me bad ground and "laid in a new ground wire". That cost a couple hundred $ and it actually worked well for a few weeks. I've changed the associated relays and that too seems to fix it for a short while.

I'm at a loss for a solution and gun shy about hiring a Jag tech to guess again. Any ideas???

moved you to your 'home' on the forums, the general tech doesn't get a great deal of exposure, and this seems model specific. g'luck!

I have the exact same problem. Hasn't bothered me enough to worry about it.

Actually mine only happens on auto wipe.

Actually I've never really tried manual wipe. Maybe it happens on that, too!

I try not to drive the car in the rain, though.

Had this problem on my '07. First changed the wiper stalk--that fixed it well enough to pass inspection, but was not the problem. Real problem was something called wiper control relay--somewhere under the hood. The provided a permanent (til it breaks again) fix.

Sounds to me like a intermittent bad wiper park switch(inside the wiper motor) which meens replacement of the wiper motor and transmission(assembly)

How much does this cost, and is it easy to just pull out/clip a new one in?

Not sure...had it done at the dealership, and the service manager "managed" to get this done as a warranty/recall type claim. Apparently it's been happening a lot. But on an '04 (older) that might be an harder, but worth a try.

I also have had the same issue on my 07. Afer many returns to the dealer (under warranty thank goodness) they finally changed the motor assembly. Now it works fine. Do not know what the price would have been.

Default I had exactly the same problem.

Mine were doing it partic on intermittent or "auto" (which has a mind and speed of it's own at the best of times).
I changed out the 2 under hood relays, about $10.00 each and that fixed it.

I think I have the same problem. Is it easy to change the relays?

it depends on how it acts as to wether it is the relays or the internal park switch, relays are easy. wiper motor not

I have a 2008. Had same problem. Dealer repaired under warranty.
Works fine now ( at least for a week now ). Service ticket states
" park switch fault, replace wiper assembly "

My issue just started recently with my 2000 XJ8. The wipers have a mind of their own....if I use the wash, it will continue wiping for 20 or 30 times, then park incorrectly. A couple more tries will come up with varied results (10 times wipe, 6 times wipe, 20 times wipe) until it parks in the right place. Happens in all settings. So after reading the above posts, I'll replace the relay's first and see if that helps.

Great info guys, my wipers are stopping right in the middle of the windshield on auto only. They work perfectly on all other settings. I think I'll replace the relays and see if that fixes my issue

Checking the relay is simple, just switch with another relay and test operation. If it works, then purchase a replacement. I have been using this method since they were installed on cars and is used by many "Master Mechs"

Do any of you electronic gurus know if relays can be tested? I'm sure some type of meter has been developed to do thus easily.

I too have a small wiper problem in that when the car is cold, the wipers dont park correctly. For instance, invoking a single wipe on the column switch causes the blades to sweep then start again and park about 2" above the normal position. When car warms up it all goes away and everything works perfectly !

At the moment, with recent expenditure on a lighting switch, I am having a pause for breath, (and for my bank balance to rebuild itself), so have held off doing anything about it.
