I have just purchased a 2009 XJ Portfolio and noticed that when I remotely open the boot (trunk across the pond) the boot opens but just unlocks and rest in the same position, It is open and can be lifted. In my Daimler when I do the same the boot actual opens maybe about a quarter way.

My Question is, is this normal operation for the XJ to just unlock and rest in same position (basically, moves up about a cm, but no gap) or should it get a little kick to an opening position.

I see the benefits on both ways but just want to check that this is normal operation in the XJ or if maybe something is sticking.

 

The action is completely normal on your car.

The only problem I have found is if the struts start to lose their gas and don't give enough push to the lid, the action can stick so you can't open or close it, and have to use the key to release it.
