Default XJ8 Nav

Just got my Jag so I haven't had time to dig into it yet, but I thought I would ask the question: is the Nav system like my friend's Lexus which won't accept input unless the car is stationary? The input address button is dim so I can't select a destination.

Yes, most functions are restricted whiile the car is in motion. Guess they dont want you playing with it.

Take care,

George

I dunno for sure on your US cars, but the newer DVD disks include as software update that does allow destination entry on the move, this worked for me when I bought a 2010 disk, but I understand it came in from '07 onwards. BTW, if you use someone elses disk to update the Nav software and then put your own disk back, the destination entry on the move stays. Oh, one more thing about newer disks - you lose 3D graphics, dunno when that came in tho'.

Most functions are still blocked in the US. Oddly enough, there is no such restriction on my range rover.

I have the 2011-2012 Nav disc in my 04 XJR.

It still gives you the warning about funcitons limited in motion, AND everything is greyed out while moving. One strange thing... when I upgraded the disc, the default search area / region changed. SO for a day or so I was like wtf is wrong with this thing. It would find a similar street name a few hundred miles away and insist that that was where I was going. I finally figured it out when I tried to enter the town first.

Take care,

George

Unhappy

Seems like for some people they are allowed to do destination changes while driving but for others they cannot.
I upgraded to the 2010 disc and I still cannot change destination while driving:-( Very annoying...

The jaguar system is very annoying in that regard. But i think it is only the usa or noth american market cars (or software provided on those discs) that have the restriction. At least my Mercedes navigation let's you pick from pre-stored locations in the address book on the fly.

My escalade nav also had the jaguar style lockout but the guys on the Cadillac forums found the simple fix of snipping the vss wire to the head unit which unlocked all the functions in motion. Supposedly this can effect accuracy if you are in an area with spotty gps reception I.e. a tunnel or something, but I haven't noticed anything adverse.

My range rover doesnt have any restrictions whatsoever enter the address as u wish.

Maybe something could be done with the jag??

Take care,

George

Default Correct sequence of steps to update Nav disk?

Can anybody outline the correct sequence of steps to take to update the XJ8 Nav system with a new DVD disk?

eg do you have to switch off the engine before removing and/or inserting the new disk?

My '04 software made me put the car in park to enter an address, but the '12 update just makes me stop. Typical US liability concerns.

NO don't switch the car off.

Simply start the car, leave it running, eject old disc from DVD, insert new disc, go back to drivers seat and view screen, DON'T SHUT OFF CAR until update is complete! Takes a couple of minutes. I just washed the car and watched for the home screen to return and that's it.

When you put the new disc in the screen should display "loading new software." If you DO interrupt the process it will still recover, but it takes longer and the screen will be completely blank while it does. That does raise the sphincter factor (ask me how I know!) but it will eventually complete the update and the screen will come back.
