ZF 6HP26 Transmission Fluid Change package kit for sale FAQ
#21
I got new bolts for my first change. The tech didn't use them, he told me that he strikes each bolt with a punch and hammer and they come off with no problem. As he is a Jag master tech, he proved he is right, since all the bolts came free with no damage.

I did just that. Klaus was all that and a bag of chips.
He really is great to deal with, even by email. Sent me the right pan (HP26) right away, no questions asked. Simply requested that I return the HP19 pan and include a check for $7 and change to cover the shipping.
I've sent back the wrong pan at this point and come to realize that I don't have enough fluid to follow the proper fill procedure.

It's not all that surprising, really. While the car sat (nose up and tail down), waiting for the HP26 pan, with the old pan loosely bolted in place to keep leaks in check, a big old puddle of ZF fluid squeezed past and made a mess out of my garage. I think I managed to drain a significant portion of the oil that was in the torque converter by having the car in such a position for so long.
So the XJR remains on jackstands for the better part of another week, while I wait for 2 more quarts to come from Klaus. Ugh!

By the way... My shop quoted me 3.5 hours for this job and they were right. It is a huge job (especially so at this point). I wish I'd taken them up on the 3.5.
Also, I had no need for new bolts. Mine came out clean and went back in perfectly.
My car is an 04 XJR with early production (mid 2003). It took the 6HP26 pan.

Hi everyone, new to the forum and been reading as much as possible. I'll be doing a fluid and filter change on my 2004 xj8 and wanted to pass on that the ZF company has a Youtube video on how to change the fluid and pan on our transmissions. They do it I believe on a BMW but its the same transmission. If your like me seeing it done helps.

A word on the bolts. Get the new ones as theyre spec'd differently. The head is thicker, larger torx used and is said to help alieviate some of the distortion and cracking/leaking of the pan that has been common with the smaller bolts. Also i have never had the updated bolts seize, strip, or give me any problems. But i can almost guarantee the old style im taking a chisel to at least one or more bolts
