My truck water pump is on its 4th stop from CA to MD in Brazil.

My computer CPU ordered after the water pump from China has already landed in this country. Passing customs here could take a while.

My objective today is to get my trans up on a table and partially dismantled to the stage where I can pull drums.

I need to be able to figure out what I should order and right now a little confused over the clutch plates as some sellers quote size.

Some pics if you can. Looking forward to a positive outcome...

Default More pics

You can see that single bolt at 3 o'clock

To me these clutch plates do not look too bad at all?

Circlip was easy to remove

Default Last bunch for now

The shaft when inserted into the housing seems to have excessive movement but not sure

Showing a bushing that I will replace.

Another set of clutches that do not seem bad to me?

I might try and source the inner bearing if I knew how. So some research.

Last drum still to get out. Will need to undo nut on rear shaft. Also want to replace seal on that shaft which so far I cannot locate.

I mention a 2nd set of clutches above however I accidentally deleted pic when editing.

They look exactly like the 1st set anyway i.e not too bad in my uneducated opinion.

I am going to replace anyway I just have to be sure to get the correct "kit".

I think the bushings are worn not that bearing so put an offer in on Ebay for a bushing kit.

Also asking a question of an Ebay seller of an overhaul kit to make sure I get the correct kit.

John, I assume you have the ZF 6HP26 repair manual. Seeing this a little late but if you need it, I have it. PM me and I can upload it to dropbox. It's 38mb so too big to post or email.

PMed you Sean.

I have ordered a bushing kit, a rebuild kit, and also a 16 point 1-3/8" deep socket for the rear bolt on the transmission.

So its a waiting game as usual.

Following your saga with admiration!
Your trans pieces look good but there are indeed probably some elements to replace to get it working.
All the best in your undertaking!

I concur.

I don't see any red flags. How does the E Clutch look? Usually the first area to go on these transmissions.

1st drum behind the pump

Clutch plates from 1st drum show "striations" on the metal

Pump looks good

Area behind the pump gears.

So I know where each drum "goes" but still not sure which is "A" or "E" yet.

I still have one last drum in the rear to extract. Today was mostly clearing up stuff and getting ready for serious work when the parts arrive.

Yep looking good. One thought. Historically only accepted practice is to use lint free towels. Dust and lint are your enemy. If those are paper, consider picking up some lint free towels and re-wipe, or better still, brushes + whatever solvents ZF recommends to flush afterwards.

Loving this thread as much as others. I think once you're done, maybe Don can rename it.

That is a good point Sean. I will do exactly as you suggest.

Fluid keeps coming out of this unit. I mop up some and more appears.

Anyhow I need to get the rear bolt off to make further progress on dismantling.

I do have a couple more pics to post which show two circlips within an inch of each other. One is way more powerful than any I have dealt with so far.

One of the circlips allowed extraction of another set of clutch plates. The more powerful one I was expecting to allow me to remove another drum but no luck. Looks like one more set of clutches behind that.

Loose circlip that holds clutch plates

You can see more powerful circlip opening at about the 5.30 o'clock position

Two circlips along with clutch plates

You can see what is left inside the trans. Will not budge probably because of the rear flange bolt.

Cannot see anything holding last drum in place now the two circlips are removed.

Bottleneck will be the bushing set from China. Earliest delivery stated as Jan 16th. Often these things can come in a lot sooner so heres hoping.

John,

Let me know if you have a better idea for a title for this thread and I'll rename it per Sean's suggestion, or I can perhaps just move the posts related to your most recent sojourn to start a different thread.

Cheers,

Don

I think moving my most recent posts related to my most recent sojourn to start a different thread would be a good idea Don as you suggest.

I will let you or Sean come up with a succinct title.

John,

Nonetheless, this is a great thread and will surely help others that may venture down this road in the future.

You are a brave man indeed!

"6HP26 Jaguar ZF6 Disassembly and Rebuild" - a suggestion...
