Default [My] Brake pedal clicks in center console fix

I used "5tevie's" Ski slope removal post to disassemble the center console.
5tevie's Ski slope removal

Each time I tapped the brake pedal, whether in Park or any other gear, I'd hear that classic "tap" noise inside the center console.

There's a switch up under there (center console) ... I'll refer to it as the "I'm in Park" switch ... when you move the gear shift lever into Park, this switch must move into the closed position.

Mine was obviously gunked up ... whether the switch was in the open or closed position, the brake lockout solenoid would activate ... (i.e., those clicks would occur whenever i touched the brake pedal).

I used my most trusted spray ... CRC QD Electronic Cleaner ... I sprayed the cleaner onto the "I'm in Park" switch ... and, voila! No more clicks when I touch the brake pedal !

Enjoy !!

Good work. It's amazing how much can be fixed with just a good cleaning.

I only wish it worked on ignition coils :-) :-)

Cheers

Case in point ... my daughter's VW Beetle was throwing CEL (Check Engine Light) MAF (Mass Air Flow) codes ... i took the MAF out and sprayed it with my QD Cleaner ... reinstalled the MAF ... no more CEL codes

I can relate to the ignition coils issue - sorry to hear about it !!

I have to agree. I swept my woman's chimney yesterday and she's let me play with the Jag all day today.

Thanks for this thread. Just what I was looking for on my 2nd search attempt! Going out to degunk the switch now as it does the apparently classic clicking. Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

The switch isn't really hard to replace but its just a little awkward working there. Took me about 40 minutes, I think.

My '95 required an adapter harness to make the new switch work, which about doubled the price. Not sure if it would be needed on a '96, as a '96 may have already been built with the later style switch.

Are you sure the clicking isn't coming from the console area? The shift interlock solenoid makes quite a loud click. A 'not in park" switch prevents the solenoid form operating unless the gearshift is in "P" so you don;t have to hear the click all day long

Cheers
