1995 XJ6 Check Engine Light
Here's hoping that I can get some relief from the frustration of a Check Engine Light. After parking my wife's car outdoors this past weekend I found the Check Engine Light on yesterday...I found the problem...I am almost sure...Something had begun building a nest in the air box as seen in photo.
My problem begins here; I changed the filter with a K&N filter started the car and drove approximately 10 miles and the light is still on. I called the dealer and was told that I could clear the light if I disconnected the battery for approximately 10-15 minutes (the radio code is another thread ) but the light is still on. The dealer told me it would cost about $55.00 to clear the code. Is there anyway I can clear the light without hooking up to a diagnostic tool...since it's a 1995 it is not OBD II compatible and it's impossible to get a diagnostic tool for earlier ODB I.
I'm beginning to think this is a money pit situation no matter how I try to circumvent a simple light with a simple solution...any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

One of my rides has OBD II compatible and despite cleaning the code w/ the tool , that idiot light still is on .
I mean if there is something a faulty sensor you may evetually see that code come on again
"95 should be OBD I but I know even some brands like '95 model year can be compatible w/ OBD II .

If it's a USA market car, and its a '95, it's OBDII.
For home use I bought an Innova 3130 scan tool. Clears codes and shows live data streams of the basic engine management functions. Works great on my '95.
Shop around...they are fairly cheap....maybe $139 or so. Google it. More than the $55 that the dealer will charge to clear the code but at least you'll be able to use it in the future if other problems crop up.
Cheers

Thanks For All The Advice
I did get the light to go out by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a minute or so…didn’t lose the radio code either!!
I will definitely look for this product. While searching for the radio code in the paperwork that came with the car I found three work orders from the dealer that resulted in the Check Engine Light that was cleared due to a faulty code...$55.00 +tax x3!
I thought the connector was OBD II. The guy at Advance Auto used an Actron reader...possibly not as good as others? Also, the Innova is sold mail order only or do auto parts stores sell them...I like to buy things like this in person so it can be returned or exchanged in person rather than the hassle of mail service.
Again, thanks!!

Good work on clearing the code :-)
USA market X300s did not use security radios, so you don't have to worry about finding an unlock code
I don't know where/if the Innova is sold over-the-counter. I am sure you can find something that will work just as well, though.
Did the prior repair paperwork make mention of what code was found?
Cheers

I would check with another car parts place before buying a reader. Advance, AutoZone and others all still read codes. And consider buying the ELM interface for use with a laptop. It will provide more features than a handheld unit. AGAIN, reports from others confirm success with all of these guys reading codes on a '95.
BTW, be sure to read the code before resetting, then check back here for help in determining the root cause.

"SEL is due to a secondary air pump fault. Air pump is running but weak, suspect internal fault No stock. Light is out now if fault reappears will need to replace LHE-154AD $193.77 + .5 Labor or 47.50 +241.27."
This was Sept '05 and a follow-up invoice from another garage, presumably when the car was last inspected by the original owner in April '07 they were charged for "Cleared codes in system" for another $64.00. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to invest in a decent scanner...I'm not made of money

Engine light
on the 1995-1997 jaguar xj6, they can be scanned at advance auto parts.
before you have them to erease the code(s), jot them down. you may need to change your plugs, or clean your o2 sensor(s), depending on the codes it gathered. if these conditions change, meaning; the codes may reveal you have misfiring in such cycinder(s), its usually the o2 sensor(s) that triggers the light, (i'm not suggesting the o2 sensor(s) are defected, its reading uneven fuel/air mixture from the exhaust gases) again, if the conditions met within specs., after the corrections,
the light will turn itself off.
