1996 XJ rearview mirror removal?

My dad has a 96 XJ6 and the rearview mirror is completely shot. I bought a generic replacement at autozone that is more than adequate. anyway, my plan is to cut the power wire going to the mirror and just cap it off.
THE PROBLEM: how do i get the existing stock mirror off???? i am mechanically inclined for certain but i am a detail guy and i am always cautious. i don't want to risk cracking the windshield. can someone please tell me how to remove this thing? there are no set screws. i tried lifting the tab on the back to no avail. i also thought the two rectangular provisions might have tabs in them, but it was just soft metal. any help would be appreciated.

I under stand what you want to do! firmly grab onto it while pushing toward THE WINDSHIELD(windsreen) and twist counter clockwise, should pop right off,I would suggest that you cap off the wiring seperately.
Good Luck.It is all in knowning how to remove it.

Hi,
I just broke my windshield trying to get the rear view mirror off. And I had been told by my Jag guy how to do it.
My car is a 1996 VDP and you slide the mirror downward along the plane of the windshield.
Hope this works for you.

Mine's a 95 VDP, and you twist, either way - it is held on by a triangular-shaped spring-wire captured in a cylinder and spread by a cam affixed to the windscreen
One or two screws to drop the ovhd console and you can unplug it and remove it without cutting wires- there is a guy in the DFW area that can repair them - was going to take mine by a month or two ago but had a change in work and some family issues and haven't had a chance yet...but you can ship to him and he returns it.
Open your armrest/console lid first, so you don't lean on it to remove the ovhd and thus have to effect a repair on your cupholder.....(like I did)
