Default 1996 XJ6 Sport 3.2 Check Engine and Oil Lamp Question

Hello All,

Quick questions about the Jag.

1. Before I turn the key to switch on the car, all my lights disappear except for the two mentioned in the Subject Line. Should this be the way it is?
2. When the car is switched on, the rev counter will be on 13000 revs, then you can hear it going lower and lower until it idles at 8000 revs. When its idle and settled you can feel yourself rocking a little, side
to side. Is this normal?

I'm new to cars and this Jag is new to me so I don't know much about it. The lights Check Engine and Oil go off once the car is switched on. It did a four hour trip and seemed fine during that at about 70-80 is what it was kept at. I THINK it may have rattled at about 80 but not sure. The person driving said it was the road but it didn't feel like it, going to have to try it again.

The check engine and oil light are on because the engine isn't running. It may be that you have a misfire due to a coil failing. Use the search function to get more information.

Hello, thank you for your response!

You'll have to treat me like a complete newbie as I don't know anything about cars!

So you say the engine light is on because the car isn't on. As these lights disappear when the car IS on, does that mean it is NOT a problem? Or it still is a problem regardless???

Also, I didn't know what a misfire was so I had to research all of that. I don't understand what you want me to search for though? Should I search something like "xj6 misfire" and go from there? Im doing that now anyway just incase.

I must add the car turns first time everytime luckily thankfully

Thanks

If you are anywhere near Worcester (UK) we might be able to meet and I can probably put your mind at rest. I'm no expert but I suspect I could do at least that much.

1. Expect a 'Christmas Tree' of lights when you switch ON the ignition: A bulb check cycle is initiated when the ignition is switched ON. This should last for about five seconds. The red ignition warning light should go out as soon as the engine is running. There may be a slight delay on the oil light going out as oil pressure builds up but anything more than few seconds needs investigating.

2. Revs:
I hope that's a typo! Revs should initially be at around 1300 for rapid warm up and drop to 800 after about a minute or less.

Thanks guys. The two lights stay on before i turn the car on. The christmas tree of lights pops up, i dont start the car, then im left with the two lights mentioned, then i turn the car on and both the lights disappear.

It turns fine and as GGG mentioned, it goes to 1300 and levels off at about 800 so that brings some peace of mind

DrMike - Thanks for suggesting that
Unfortunately im near the north way up north yorkshire ways
Thanks though
