Default 95 XJ6 4.0L Tune Up: Oil, filter, plugs

95 XJ6 4.0L with 66k miles. We just bought the car, and it needs a good tune up. The plugs in it now are Champions (Is that OEM?) and they look pretty bad. Any recommendations on replacement plugs? What is OEM?

Where can I get an oil filter for this thing? And what brand is recommended? Advance Auto only had a P/N for a Purolator (bottom line brand) listed in the book, and they didn't even have that in stock..

The oil on the dipstick has a white sludge residue - NOT GOOD . I am hoping this is only from moisture (or possibly fuel, hopefully not coolant) entering the crankcase and then sitting for long periods of time without being driven. Is it normal for this to happen with prolonged sitting??

Either way, it needs an oil change, I guess we'll see if the white residue returns (fingers crossed). What oil brand and viscosity are you guys running in these engines? We're new to the European car world.

Thanks everyone!

Filter: I live in a small town so nobody ever has a filter. I order several at a time from the local parts house or, if I am placing an order with a Jag supplier, will order a few genuine Jag filters at the same time. Some alternatives are Delco PF964 and Bosch 72147. The genuine Jag filter is EBC9658

Oil: Opinions vary. I use 5/30 year round...any name brand. Nothing exotic is required.

Sludge: After changing the oil take 'er hour for an hour long highway run. Odds are the sludge will go away as the condensations evaporates

Plugs: Champion is the OEM brand and will work fine. I use NGK Iridium because I heard they're easier on the coils....<shrug>....which are sometimes a weak spot on these cars.

These are great cars. You'll like it.

Cheers

Thank you Doug. That's great that you have all those P/N's on hand! I am going to compare prices. I'd like to use the JAG filter, but if a diff brand of same or similar quality is half the price... I'll be changing it every 4,000 miles anyway.

5W/30 it is. I think I'll use Formula Shell oil. They have an excellent rep. I have only heard and continue to hear good things about Shell, from reputable sources too..

For the sludge issue, I'll probably run some additive or a 1/2qt of ATF to clean it up a bit. Any recommendations on good additives??

I'll pick up a set of good Bosch or maybe Champion plugs. I always like to stay with the OEM brand or at least with brands affiliated with the same country... (NGK - Asian, Bosch - European, AC - GM, etc...). NGK makes a good plug though, I can see why you might run that in your Jag..

Don't know about normal, but the same sort of thing happens every winter with my 92 4.0l (now owned 7 years). The first time I saw it, required a swift change of underwear.

It now gets it's oil dropped as soon as it starts to come out of hibernation.

Hahhaa "swift change of underwear". I cant say I didnt have a similar reaction. Hopefully I'll change the oil and the residue does not return.

I put in some Champion "OEM" plugs. The parts store said they were OEM plugs but they had a different P/N than the ones that come out of the car. Oh well, they should be fine. I got a NAPA Pro Select filter - it was like 8 bucks!! That's ridiculous, it's just a normal filter, only thing is that no one else uses that thread size & filter size together. I just put in Valvoline 5W-30. The white sludge issue seems to be resolved - whew!

RC12YC should be the OEM Champion plugs. Even when you open the Jaguar OEM part boxes the plugs still have RC12YC printed on them.
