Default 96 XJ6 Jag Shifter problem

hello everyone, I have a 1996 XJ6, and alot of times, mostly in the morning when I start the car and press my shifterI dont hear the clicking sound, and I cant get my car from park mode into reverse or drive. It happeneds about 75% of the time. Sometimes it work get into gear after 2 or 3 tries, but sometimes I can take 25-30 tries before it actually clicks and then I can get into gear. Do you know if its my brake switch?? Maybe needs some cleaning or soemthing?? I have heard different stories, if you can help I would really appriicate that, dont wanna throw money down the drain for nothing, thanks.

There's a tiny little metal flap that needs to be depressed by the shaft of the shifter in order for the shift solenoid to disengage and allow the shifter to move freely. it is possible that it just isnt as springy as it once was in a past life, and you just need to nudge the shifter farther into park to get that lever to read properly. I ripped apart the whole center console and that seemed the most likely explanation to me.
