'96 XJ6 Park/reverse lever issue...........
Hi, for quite some time now it has been necessary to "wiggle" the gear knob to start the car from "park", but now the reverse lights are becoming another problem by not coming on when in reverse and need to "wiggle" the lever to switch on the reverse lights...we are reasonably sure that when the "R" is illuminated on the console, the reverse lights are on, but it looks as though the switches/sliders to enable engine starting and also the reverse lights are in the small black box immediately to the right of the console under the console cover, before I get carried away and try to remove this 'box", am I correct?..or is the switching for these two gear lever positions somewhere else?
Many thanks in advance
Peter.

Simple fix.
Remove the ski slope timber top, and on the RH side of the leaver assembly is a "linear switch" held to the main thingy with 2 small screws/bolts. Remove them, and clean that switch assembly with "Contact Cleaner", and work it through its range a few times.
Elongate the 2 holes in the plastic switch, so some fore and aft adjustment is avaiable.
Spray some WD40 (or whatever you have) on the connector plug, and refit the switch assembly. Leave the attaching nuts/screws LOOSE, and switch ON the ign. Slide the switch so that the "P" is lit up. Tighten firmly. Then stomp on the brakes, and drag that lever out of "P" and into "R", take a walk and see if the reverse lights are ON. If not a small adjustment of said switch will be needed.
Once all si sweet, refit teh timber, and enjoy teh car.
That switch fills up with crud, spilt Coke (drink type), crumbs from lunch etc. I have even found a metal hair clasp in one, and that car was going some real wierd stuff.
Getting the balance right with that switch can be time consuming, but that "P" MUST light up, or the car will not start.
