Hey guys, first off I have just bought a 97 jaguar xj6 v6 4.0 I love it and everything about it. I have been fixing a couple things here and there. My next fix is just a new gas cap as it turns my check engine light on cause it's old and loose. It came back on today which I read with my decoder but however today is the first time I ever turned the car on and a loud beeping about 5 or so times came on and went off. Any ideas what it could be cause I have nothing on my decoder bit then again it's a real fancy one do I'm not sure. Thanks everyone for any help.

Welcome to the forum...
That is most likely your ICE head unit telling you to clean the tape workings, or lube the aerial. Take a look at the radio display while the beeping is going on.

Thank you I have been trying to get to do it again all day but nothing. But I did notice is when it was beeping there was no radio playing until it stopped and then the radio came on

It could be the "AC Temp sender" (I assume that's what it's called) unplugged behind the drivers side knee panel trim.
The air con would show "er" as well though. Worth a look, could be an easy fix.

I betcha money that's it
....threw me off too when it first happened to me as it is a pretty annoying, urgent and loud beeping that then just goes away without a trace
But now it's done it a few times and I expect it

It's not a "lube Ariel" but IIRC its "clean Ariel" and the reason you haven't heard it again is because it isn't that the Ariel is dirty it's just that it comes up based on a time cycle. I told the new owners of my X300 today not to panic the first time they hear it nor assume the Ariel needs cleaning, it's just a reminder based on time usage.

Then it's an inline 6 cylinder, not a v6.Originally Posted by Cbell89

Yeah, but if he doesn't lube it with a bit of teflon or similar after cleaning it will become "replace aerial" when it gets stiff and the motor breaks the little plastic rack that runs it up and down. Originally Posted by JTsmks

That feature can be turned off by a certain button press sequence on the head unit that I don't recall.
