Default ABS module leaking

Greetings Folks, I feel bad only coming here when I've got a problem, but here it is.

Dissolved paint plus rust in the engine compartment of my '96 Sovereign has been diagnosed by the body shop and my Jaguar mechanic as brake fluid leaking from the ABS control module situated rear right of engine compartment i.e. just in front of front passenger seat in LHD car.

Jag Man (my mechanic) proposes to rebuild the ABS unit as they are expensive to replace.

I have had a quick but not comprehensive check on-line, and it would appear these are indeed expensive parts, costing over £1,000.

What do we think about a rebuild?

Thanks for your help.

Try e-bay! I had brake problems some time back and replaced my ABS with one bought on e-bay. Cheap. Easy to install but tricky to bleed!

Not a problem I have heard of before on the X300, so probably lots of serviceable units out there in breakers or e bay.
Unless your mechanic has experience of refurbishing these, I would be inclined to leave well alone, as they are tricky to rebuild and tricky to test. That said, there seem to be several professional refurbishing companies out there if e bay doesn't appeal.

Thanks guys, I have a used unit off ebay coming to me, £85 including carriage from UK to Switz (plus whatever Swiss customs choose to add). Fingers crossed that sorts it, and way less complicated and expensive than a rebuild. As Countyjag says, I don't get the sense that this is a common problem, so a used unit should be a safe bet.

Yep, previous owner of my 97 had the same issue, and replaced with a used unit for the same reason.
