AC Expansion Valve...
As a new member
I have to replace the expansion valve in my "95" XJ6, part isn't much but the labor part seems to be extensive with this vehicle. This is not my first Jag so I can do most all the work but, I haven't been able to find any schematic's or any information on proper procedure if anyone can supply any information on the how to....It would be very helpful.....THX

John, well, for that valve, at a minimum, you are going to need a freon recovery tank and then a means to get R-12 (controlled item, requires a special MVAC license to purchase). If you have those at your ready, then the rest is going to be pretty easy. If you want the step by step, let me know and I will look it up for your car and tell you all that is involved.

Dear thermo
thanks for the info, i do have the availability for the extraction and would greatly appreciate the step by step instructions. I believe that the capacity for the system is 38 pints but shouldn't have any problems as the system will be evacuated and then replaced....again thank you for your help..........john

Your system is R134a and does not require any special license for refrigerant purchase.
The expansion valve from Jaguar is part of the evaporator JLM19944 (valve NSS) BUT it might be available from other sources. The climate control unit must be removed from the bulkhead and disassembled to replace any internal component. When I replaced evap units I always removed the expansion valve in case I ever needed just that part for future repairs. You might remove it and try to match it at an A/C parts supplier.
As for step by step procedures, not even JTIS will outline every step as it assumes all Jaguar techs have been to the mandated training sessions or will have a senior tech in the dealership to assist. Some repair manuals attempt to hold your hand with some repairs but Jaguars are not a common car for repair so there is not alot of info available.

Thank You
I was aware that it was 134a, thank you. But I was looking for a drawing for exact location or a 3d overview, I just don't want to make the job any bigger than it is and want to make sure that I don't take anything out that creates another problem down the road or during the process of putting everything back. I purchased a CD from online but it doesn't seem to have the information that I was hoping for and haven't been able to find a true service manual to purchase. Again thank you for your response... Basically you remove the dashboard/facia and unbolt the climate control unit from the bulkhead, disassemble and remove the EVAP unit and the expansion valve. Jaguar warranty time is less than 5 hours but if you have never done this then I would plan for well over 10 hours of labor.
