Default AJ16 TDC & Cam Timing

Hello everyone,

I am reassembling the engine in my 1997 XJR following a timing chain tensioner/damper renew turned head gasket replacement..

Now it has come time for me to set the cam timing and have come to a dilemma. I began by finding TDC on Cylinder #1 using a dial indicator as illustrated here:

The problem is that the indication on the cam position sensor does not line up how it did when I first removed it, see below:

Is it possible that the chains were allowed to shift at some point during my work? I've purchased and aligned the camshafts at the dial indicator measured TDC using tool 18G1433.

Do you think I can just realign the cam position sensor to be in the correct position with the current TDC setting?

Please let me know if any of that wasn't clear and I will try to clarify.

Thank you, Michael

YES.

Just turn the CMPS until the O is centered in the window.
AJ16 info for you.

I may be misinterpreting the photo, but would you not want to have torqued the head bolts before attaching the timing chain?

Hello everyone, thank you for your input. Nothing too surprising, thankfully.

Nice observation about the head bolts, they are tightened down now, just wanted to make this post beforehand to have a chance to hopefully get some feedback.

Thanks again!
Michael
