Default Alternator - genuine or OE?!

My alternator has seized... Should I go for genuine Jag or a (much cheaper) OE one? Please reply "genuine" or "OE" and I'll add up the votes!

Default Big versus small bucks

Well, don't let me talk you out of OE, but there is a huge difference in cost.

OE runs 600-750USD online at Jaguar Classic Parts. I didn't check other

New aftermarket appears to be a Nippon Denso (maybe?) on Rockauto is $112:

"WPS / POWER SELECT 13524N {Click Info Button for Alternate/OEM Part Numbers} Info
NDENSO UNIT"

Remanufactured on Rockauto is about $200

If it were me, I'd try the new Nippon Denso (if it is NDenso) for $112.

The AC Delco reman is about $180.

If the alternator is not physically damaged, you may also want to consider taking it to a local automotive electrical shop for repair. I have used this method for many years with good results as many of the 'rebuilt' or 'remanufactured' units are either not thoroughly gone through, or are an incorrect fit.

Typically the cost to recondition an alternator is about 125$US. At the very least, you know it will fit back into the car!

Has any UK member used these ?
Car Services - Reading | Burghfield Starter and Alternator Centre

It's all they do (along with reconditioning starters) so you would presume they are proficient at it.

I generally buy OE Jaguar parts and have done so for over forty years. The exceptions I make to this are brake pads, alternators and starter motors. Jaguar don't manufacture these items but do add exceptionally high on-costs to supply through their dealer network.

I won't go with aftermarket manufacturers (of unknown quality) but I do source from aftermarket suppliers of the identical (Jaguar specification) components.

In your situation, I'd give the family repair business with over thirty years experience a go. Their web page shows they will examine the unit, give an estimate and charge nothing if you don't want to accept it.

Me too.

Years ago I began having too many problems with over-the-counter starters and alternators. Since switching to a local starter-alternator specialist I've never had a problem. Plus, it's really nice being able to actually talk with the people who are doing the overhaul. Knowledgeable, and helpful when peculiar situations come up.

Cheers
