Anyone glued their cupholder lid shut?

Anyone glued their cupholder lid shut?
The cupholder was a royal pain in my previous XJ6 and even more so in this XJR. I would really like to obtain a cupholder-less lid and replace it altogether, but since this part doesn't seem to be readily available I'd rather just glue the wretched thing shut.
Has anyone done this? Where did you apply the glue, at the hinge? What type of glue?
I'm assuming I need to disengage the two sliding spring arms on either side. Any other tips on disengaging or removing the spring completely?

It's not he plastic cupholder itself that drives me crazy, it's the fact that over every large bump the door pops open. The sliding button only barely engages the recess in the flip open lid.
Besides, the plastic arms don't hold anything I might want to put in there anyway. I don't drink pop, and I rarely drink coffee in the car so I really wouldn't miss it. I can always stuff a cup in the ashtray once in a while since I don't smoke cigarettes either.
Eliminating the spring altogether would be another doable option. Any tips?

just remove the 2 springs inside. Take the console lid off, pull the screws out, open it up, and there is a spring on either side, similar to that of an ink pen - but longer, that can be removed, and no more flipping open on the bumps. but, you can still oepn it to hold a phone, or something silly.

I'm curious as to what you guys actually DO to your cup holders that makes them so messed up (unless you inherited it that way)? My XJ6L has 71K on it and mine work flawlessly, never pop open and are useful in holding a standard water bottle, can of soda or my 32oz Kangaroo Store coffee cup every AM. Are people trying to shove "big gulps" in the thing? This is IMHO a case of operator error more then a faulty design.

My previous 97 XJ6 which I bought used came with an "auto-pop-up" cupholder lid. The previous owner took a small piece of metal, cut it into a tiny rectangle, and bridged the plastic lip of the sliding opening button and the recess that the lip inserts into. So every time I wanted to use the cupholder I'd have to hold the lid, slide back the button, grab the metal rectangle, open the lid, put the metal piece somewhere I won't lose it, and redo the process when closing the lid. I have no idea why the plastic lip did not reach far enough to insert fully into the recess, maybe worn or bent hinges?
My 96 XJR is completely non functional. The lid will not stay closed for the same reason as above.
In any case, I tried using the cupholder with a Sigg water bottle and several sizes of insulated coffee mugs, but any time I turned sharply or accelerated quickly (what is the point of having an XJR if not for that ) the bottles would half fall out. The cupholder is too low on tall bottles, and it's not sticky like the inserts on newer cars.
So, bad design, bad materials, age= useless cupholder.

All XJ sedan console lids from 1988 to 1992 are one-piece lids.
They are held down with a magnetic strip instead of the hook/latch.
They can be retro-fitted but the interior colors are slightly different so a 'dye-job' will be needed to match.
The salvage yards must be full of old XJs with console lids???

I'm with JTsmks, can't quite understand how so many fail unless subjected to a bit of rough treatment.
Mine works fine (136k KM) and I use it often for medium coffee cups. One observation is that the armrest/lid sits vertical or slightly forward when open and can easily slam shut if the retaining arm is loose. The shock of any "slam shuts" may not do the cup holder mechanism any good. I cured this by tightening the screw on the retaining arm so now the armrest needs light pressure to close it - no more slams. Also, if the small lug on the cup holder locking button is worn and no longer holds shut, try building up the lug with 2 part epoxy resin adhesive applied in several layers, allowing curing time in between each one.
IMO the cup holder provides a useful convenience on the Jag and is better than some flimsy spring-out dash mounted arrangements I've seen on other cars, and 100% better than some modern cars with no cup holders at all!!

Captain Jaguar's Cathouse
