Default Anyone know a solution for the loose Steering Column in the X300's.

hello, I know I have seen some posts on this somewhere. I really wanted to know what was the cure for the x300 loose steering column problem. I noticed with my column that if I over tighten the screws underneath the column, the column is very tight with no play, but the tilt motor option will then not operate. But as soon as I loosen the bolts, the tilt motor will then adjust and work perfectly, but the column because loose again.

Maybe tighten it to where everything works and use threadlock to ensure it doesnt come loose again? never had this issue so im not sure what the best rememdy would be. But thats an idea. others will chime in.

I replied to a post awhile back on how i fixed mine.
1. Remove bottom steering colum cover.
2. You will notice two Star Screws that have lock tight on them already and are screwed into the column
3. Remove the star screws and push the steering column all the way up manually then push star screw bracket into place so the gears are synced. Tighten to remove play but if you tighten to much on the star screws you will bind the gears and thats why it wont move.

Let me know if this fixes it.

Wow, it's amazing what can turn up in a random search... I was looking for info on why my steering wheel reach no longer works, when I stumbled across this and had to go try it.

When I got my XJ6 6 years ago, the wheel would move in all directions necessary, but I was always confused as to why it would never raise very high, not even enough for my average height to read all of the instrument panel. I gave up because it seems to be working mostly. The reach cable is now broken so I found this in a search, and I've just tried it. My tilt function now works perfectly, better than I've ever had it; the reach function still needs attention but I can live without it with proper titling.

Perfect advice, thanks bandre. (Pay special attention to the part about not over-tightening those screws on the underside of the column)

Hi, could you please specify which two screws you are talking about? There are two screws close to the actual steering wheel, then two more, further down the column, close to the splined end of the column.

Thanks.

Hi, I don't have a pic (or a car to take one of, since it's off at the smog station) but the 2 screws your looking for are torx screws right about underneath the ignition lock barrel, very easy to get at.

Default Up/down movement

I have an electrically adjustable steering wheel in my 1996 XJR6 and it works in all directions... BUT it will move (manually) about 1/4" upwards from whatever position it's in. This requires me to "lift" the wheel but it returns to its resting position naturally.

Is this the same sort of problem that's being reported on this thread? If so, I'll take on board the solutions suggested!
