Blower runs continuously — won’t respond to speed settings
Hi everyone,
I have a new Problem with my X300:
As soon as I turn on the ignition (first position), the interior blower under the steering wheel area starts running continuously. It doesn’t matter which speed I select — it keeps blowing at the same rate all the time.
The only way to make it stop is by either turning the A/C system off completely or switching the climate control to “AUTO.”
Has anyone experienced this issue before or knows what might be causing it? Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
" interior blower under the steering wheel area " left of right hand steering wheel model ?
The earlier squared body 4 door X40 blowers control work differently
See page 106 lower right side of your 97 X300 wiring guide linked below
Notice the high speed relay functions as a full current ground path , can be a stuck closed high speed relay , click ( in your fingertips only ) test against the good side
Unfortunately, it didn’t work. I checked the relays and swapped them around, but there was no change. I also checked the fuse. As soon as the ignition is turned on, the blower under the steering wheel (left-hand drive) blows at full speed and can’t be turned down via the climate control panel. The only way to stop it is to press “Auto” on the climate control panel — then it stops. Strange. Unfortunately, I have no idea where else I could look now.
For me it looks like either climate control panel failed or speed control module on the blower failed. Speed controls are same on both blowers so probably worth a try to reach out there and swap them and check if the problem moves or stay. If moves you need a new speed control (or blower assy) if not than its a panel failure and you need a panel.
BTW when you pullled the LH High Speed relay the blower stops or not?
No, it only stopped when I also removed the rear relay.
As soon as I find the time, I’ll remove the trim under the steering wheel and take a look there.
Has anyone here ever removed the blower under the steering wheel? How big is the effort and what needs to be disassembled?
Front relay gives direct ground to the blower motor so it runs full speed. The speed control box brings modified ground depending on what speed is requested by climate control panel. So if you remove the high speed relay and the blower still runs at full speed then my guess on speed control failure looks legit. But the climate control fail also shouldn't be excluded. BTW if you switch the climate off does the blower run?
Now it depends on what is easier for you - obtain the working panel at least just for the test (as its easier to replace and will confirm what is failed is it panel fail or not) or try to reach both blowers and swap the speed controls on them. Should you be in the US i would gladly borrow you the control panel as i have one spare.
If I switch the climate off the blower doesn't run.
Unfortunately, I’m from Germany — not “unfortunately” because I’m from Germany, but because I can’t take you up on your offer
However I really appreciate that you made me this offer.
I still have some blower parts lying around in my garage. I’ll take a look over the weekend to see if there’s a JLM11959 power transistor among them and try replacing it.
