Blue Smoke & Engine Vibration
Hi, “new bee” here. Here is my issue: Drove my 1996 Jaguar XJ6 to Chicago for the 4th of July. On the way up the check engine light came, then, it started to flash. Pulled over and noticed oil coming from the top of the engine…made it to the hotel, however, car was smoking and running rough, but not overheating.
Towed the car back to Indianapolis.
Got a mechanic here who looked at the spark plugs and found that they were covered with oil. He removed as much oil as possible before unscrewing. He told me that he got misfire codes and that I needed new spark plugs, gaskets, grummets and ignition coils. Purchased everything and he put them in the vehicle.
Car still runs rough and is smoking slightly from the engine and underneath the car by the catalytic converter…a lot of oil is back there under the car still…and engine is vibrating badly, check engine light still on.
Before my mechanic swaps out everything and I spend any more cash, does anyone have any ideas where I should focus my attention?

" Gaskets and grummets [sic]" is a little vague. There are composite paper gaskets that go under each coil, if there was $20.00 on the ticket for these that is a normal add-on, does not require additional labor, and fixes absolutely nothing.
If he replaced the cam cover gasket and the six spark plug well seals that are an imperative addition to this repair, he was trying to stop the oil leaks which are the reason that the spark plus wells are full of oil, and why the engine was leaking externally. Either he didn't do this work, didn't do it properly, or was trying to seal up a cam cover which has deteriorated to the point that it must be replaced for the gasket and spark plug well seals to get the job done. It happens with the '95 to '97 cam covers (valve cover).
None of this is very complex.

In addition to Andy's spectacular post, I might add that the audience would like to know why the check engine light is on.....Have ya scanned the ECM to read the codes? I am just grinding my teeth wondering why.
And why didn't your boy tell you why the light was on and give you the code/s?
