Default Bonnet/Hood Earth Strap.

Interesting Info.

A question re the bonnet earth strap was asked on a FB page and I thought that the answer would be interesting for forum readers

Cheers,
Jeff.

"I'm a ham operator so I deal with this all the time on my truck. You have to ground strap your hood or the reception is off, you'll hear it mostly in AM stations. The ground plane of the car must be consistent.

The other thing it affects is increased electronic noise in the communications between computer components in the car. Meaning that you'll have computer glitches as well. It's important. These seeming little things are there for a reason. It also affects coil wear. The change in electrical potential above the coils which are VERY high voltage will affect their wear/performance.

You want the engine ground to match the body ground or the coils will spark through where they're not supposed to earlier than if things are properly bonded. The inconsistent connection between the greased hinges of the hood are not good enough to maintain a constant ground plane. That generates noise with every vibration on a bad connection. It also creates something called a slot antenna which receives RF in the higher frequencies. This RF on the ground plane will drive your computers crazy. The ground plane of a computer is the least shielded part of a system. If you have fluctuating voltage from induced or received RF it will eventually damage the computer physically. The high Voltage from your coils will charge the hood as a capacitor. Then when a connection is made through the bad connection of the hinges that high voltage will snap to the rest of the car causing a voltage surge in the radio, the computers, the injectors, the sensors etc... Get a new strap and bond it."
