Brake Cooling Ducts

Brake Cooling Ducts
How important are these ducts for actually cooling the brakes? I notice the ducts on my dads X300 are loose, and are now aiming nowhere near the brakes. One is about to come off, so will he be OK for a trip or two before we get them replaced?
Also, those sensors that are located in the ducts (one is external temp sensor, don't know about the other), are either of them used for anything critical, or just for the climate control system? I'm going to have to disconnect one...

Thanks
This is a really big help as I was wondering myself how essential / important they were as I killed one of mine totally skidding car into central reservation sign last month. Also think I killed entire windscreen washer bottle, sensors, pump
Is there a part number for cooling ducts? Seems to be about the only thing i can't find on ebay (although must go looking again for washer kit later in month - flat broke as result of expenses incurred following accident - i hate snow, ice, black ice etc!)
ta again

I also thought there was just one temp sensor. However, I read recently that there are two and the other one - in the other duct - operates the heated seats and heated windscreen washer jets. I'll need to check this to confirm if my car has it fitted. It does show on the Jaguar parts website though doesn't mention the heated seats - only the washer jets.

I have no heated seats/heated windscreen washer jets.
But there is definitely one sensor in each duct, and they are both wired to something. From the front of the car: the right hand duct has a sensor that protrudes a couple of cm down into the duct - I'm pretty sure this is the Climate Control external temp sensor. The sensor on the left hand side does not protrude into the duct. It can be seen as a small 'disk' in the same position as the right one. the body of it reads:

Air duct sensors
Theres are two sensors on my 97 x300 executive, one of which reads outside temperature and regulates the climate control when on "Auto" and the other does likewise but operates heaters in the windscreen washer bottle and heated washer jets, when the temperature is low enough to warrant it. Nothing to do with heated seats as far as I know, though they wont operate when temp is above a certain level, so there is some control active somewhere.
