These are great engines and I've heard stories of 250k miles and still running strong. That doesn't mean I'd actually EXPECT all of them to last that long. I don't care how you slice it, 187000 is a LOT of mies and anything can happen.
I'd be more worried about the transmission, personally ! That many miles is pushin' the limits of the 4L80E trans, IMHO.
Cheers

I'd say a couple grand for a tranny overhaul.
Last I heard you can't even get many internal engine parts---rings, main bearings, rod bearings. Not sure if it's still true but a year or two ago there was a supply problem. So....I don't think you'll be overhauling one of these engines.

My 95 3.2 XJ Sport has 300,000km on the clock. Still buttery smooth. (that's alomst exactly 187,000 in miles by the way)
Observe this list when you test drive:
Jaguar 1995-1997 X300 (AJ16)

3 Leaking automatic dimming rear view mirror – free replacement (improved model)
4 Oil pressure sender fails – early models only
5 Seat memory (small changes?) and stiff front to back movement switch
6 Fuel sender shows 3/4 full when tank full – clean or renew sender unit
7 Rust spots along windscreen rubber area – visual check
8 Failed steering wheel motor, either the up/down (tilt) or in/out (drive coupling shaft fails)
9 Leaking camshaft cover seal – check the front of the head for oil leaks – renew seal

13 Rust on rear wheel arches (pre ‘95 models)
14 Radio fails to recognise CD player (NOT CONT) – (re)solder SMD component
15 Rough idle – use correct spark plugs
16 Dirty throttle body – can lead to stiff throttle/rough idle – clean
17 Corroding rear bumper supports – renew
18 Mouldy smell when air conditioning switched on or off – clean evaporator
19 Timing chain rattle -fit new-style tensioner
20 Worn front shock absorber isolators cause clunking noises from front of car – renew
21 Worn lower radiator mounting bushes – renew
22 Leaking pwr steering high-pressure hose-renew every 100,000 km
23 Petrol tank takes ages to completely fill-clean pipe to charcoal canister
24 Failed J-gate lighting – renew bulb or use a green 12V LED
25 Premium sound rear woofer cone detaching from voice coil
26 Sagging headliner (hot climates only)
27 Cable(s) through boot lid hinge can fracture
28 Worn driver’s seat bolsters
29 Corroded valve cover

Just for the fun of it my '95 (83k miles currently) has/had the following problems from your list:
1 Cracks in exhaust manifold
(new gaskets and two used manifolds, $180)
2 Faint LCD clock display segments
(good used clock $40)
8 Failed steering wheel motor, either the up/down (tilt) or in/out (drive coupling shaft fails)
(used motor and drive, $65)
14 Radio fails to recognise CD player (NOT CONT) – (re)solder SMD component
(not fixed yet, $125 to send back to Alpine))
15 Rough idle – use correct spark plugs
$48 for NGK iridiums)
16 Dirty throttle body – can lead to stiff throttle/rough idle – clean
($0 but lots of labor)
24 Failed J-gate lighting – renew bulb or use a green 12V LED
($2 bulb)
25 Premium sound rear woofer cone detaching from voice coil
(not fixed yet)
28 Worn driver’s seat bolsters
(redye once year $40)
34 Interior lights flicker – clean or renew rear door microswitch
($0)
44 Loose upper steering column
(not fixed yet...barely loose)
I'll add: diff failure at 70k miles ($400 rebuilt--Ebay) water pump at 55k miles ($75 rebulit), idler pulleys at 82k miles ($90 for 3) , rear wheel bearing at 65k miles ($65 for kit). Intercooler pump ($100 Ebay--Mustang Cobra) Oh...and a brake light switch....about $100 as I recall.
All labor provided by...me !
Only the differential failure rankles me a bit. Even though I drive hard I would've expected 100k miles of of it.
Cheers

As other posters have put here, there can be a whole list of things to fix, or which will fail and need fixing. The engine is the least of your problems, this was probably the best engine Jaguar ever made, the V8s that came after were nothing but trouble for a lot of years until about 2002.
Stevetech puts his finger on potentially the major and most costly to fix issue, which is the autotransmission. These do not last for ever, and if they fail, are quite expensive.
If you're a bit hesitant, look for one with lower miles, but essentially any 15 year old car is going to need care and attention as you can see from the lists in the posts.

life is fixing...
I guess I have to look at it as a toy that will make my family...(and of course me) a happy persons to feel the "glamour' of having a truly "all the way" JAGUAR...I had one back in college 1976 (xj6) and have good memories of it. Back then the car was moody, but nothing I could not handle.
My every day car is a 1964 Ford Thunderbird (FLYBIRD as many call it)... of course nothing to compare, but we have this car Impecable...everything works, even de A/C and we are very proud of it.
My wife do not want to me to get this Jaguar (too many miles) and many things can go wrong, but my two daugthers are with me...after all is only a $2,000 car to buy it and maybe another $1,000 to put it back into track.
Will see... when I am in these cases (undecided) I use a Life Formula: LET GO...LET GOD.
If it is for us it will be, and if it is, We will need all the help we can get.
Note: if any body knows of any Jag mechanic (Here in Miami) that I can go to...please let us know.
Thanks

You get a lot all in one package with an XJR: luxury, power, roadholding, room for four....and....heh heh....that Jaguar style :-)
The basic car is built like a tank but the little problems do creep up as time goes by. Most of them are easy fixes for a halfway decent DIY mechanic.

XJR's only use the blower 4.0 six, right?
I hear a lot of praise for the 4.0 AJ16, but aside from being a bit less powerful, is the 3.2 a lesser engine in any way?
I'm just a poor 20 yr old, so I tell myself it's probably just as well I got the 3.2 - gas ain't cheap in NZ.
It's funny, they call my 3.2 X300 'XJ Sport', but the 3.2 never had the 'sport mode'... So apart from the different interior and less chrome trim, is there anything else that differentiates it from the normal 3.2 X300?

Make it simple s...
After reading your "logical sense" of how to handle the buying of the 95xjr-supercharge, I came to the conclusion of using the "KISS" rule..."MAKE IT SIMPLE STUPID(or you can say...make it simple SIR); so I am taking your adviced and Im going to purchase it...any way the guy came down to $1,800, We just going to enjoy the most we can and if something goes wrong I will sell it by parts.
thanks...
thanks...
When buying my X300, I too had felt some trepidation over the high mileage. I justified my purchase with the knowledge that, even if the car was going to fail, I could break it and sell it in parts for much more than I paid for it in the first place.
Now, whether I could have brought myself to dismantle a beautiful Jag is another story...
