Cannot open doors from inside
A few months ago I was unable to open the passenger front door from the inside on my 1997 XJ6. I pulled off the door handle and saw the clip to the rod on the door pull had broken. I have replaced the clip and door will still not open from inside. Now the drivers door has the same problem. Any suggestions or do I have to replace both door locks?
You may have better response in the X300 section that covers XJ6 models 95-97. You may have an issue with both latches or more linkage to inspect. It may be a latch issue, but I would be more suspect of the linkage.
I suspect a linkage issue. I had a similar problem on my XJS; the linkage was a little tricky. You'll need to pull off the door panel to get access to all the linkage. At least the XJ6 provides easier access than the XJS...
Either the back of the door handle is broken where the cable attaches. Or the plastic round piece that fits in the latch arm on the other end of the cable, is either broken and missing. These are both common, more so the round piece. But buying the inner handle and cable assmelby fixes both problems
thats the latch, and yes the cable comes out of it. It has a inverted L shaped slot that the cable ball end and the plastic bushing go into on the latch lever to open the door. The outer sheath of the cable slips into this L slot to hold it. Get a mirror and light and youll be able to see how it works, whats broken and how it comes apart
