AC stopped working

AC stopped working
I have a 97 XJR with about 55000 miles, the ac stopped working a few thousands miles ago, the car was hardley driven in the summer and that's why I didn't takckle the problem. Since the car has low miles, I'm not suspecting the problem to be with the freon. I would like to first jump the compressor, but I don't know which one is the ac relay and how to jump it, that is unless somebody thinks I should start eleswhere. Thank you in advance.

The compressor is not kicking on, and I just hooked up the gauges, low is (40) and high is (0). I Thought both sides should read the same when
compressor is not on. So what do guys think?
BTW I did read the thread that was started by pan84, good thread but doesn't get into what to do when the compressor is not engaging.

If the compressor is not engaging, put some gauges on the system and see if you have pressure. If not then pressure switch will cut power to the compressor so as to prevent damage (there is usually a high pressure switch and a low pressure switch). If there is freon, then it could be a relay or the compressor itself. You can try jumping the compressor by giving it power directly from the battery to see if it works.

That would either indicate that you have some sort of blockage or that the gauge is not connected properly. I suspect that the gauge is not connected properly.
Check the connection and make sure that the valve on the fitting is opening.
40psi on the low side when the compressor is not running is too low which would indicate that you are low on freon.... but I would still expect to read pressure on the high side.
A general rule is about 35-40psi on the low side and 2-2.5 times the outside temp on the high side (so if it's 100 degrees outside, you should read between 200-250psi on the high side).
Good luck.

Probably blockage in the system, or high side not connected properly
