Default Cd changer

Just fitted an alpine cd changer to my x300 1997 ,wiring was all in place and the unit gets power and ejects cartridge etc ,it’s a known good changer and was working yesterday on another car but when I press the button on the head unit for cd nothing happens ,I suspect a dry joint on that switch but is there anything else to check and does anybody have instructions for repairing the dry joint on the cd tape switch please

Are both the radio head unit and the CD changer JAGUAR?

Read the TSBs for more info.

The other car it was working in was probably not a Jaguar. An Alpine CD changer won't work with the Jaguar head unit as a direct replacement, even though the original Jaguar changer was made by Alpine. I think it had something to do with the supplier/marketing agreements at the time.

When I worked at the dealer I had a customer come in for a radio head exchange. The buttons were 'balky' and some were missing.
I installed the remanufactured replacement and the customer left. He returned a while later and complained that the CDDJ did not work.

I looked at it in the boot and it was a generic ALPINE so I showed him a copy of the TSB.

He asked f I could put his old one back in.
I took the reman back to parts and reinstalled his old one.

He was happy.

The cd changer labelled alpine was working in another xj6 x300 identical to mine at the weekend,yes that’s right,a Jaguar !

It has power and ejects and loads a cartridge and cd perfectly my car but the cod button isn’t connecting to the player,I am thinking a dry joint at said button,or a cable not plugged in at the back of the head unit,

anybody know now if the cd cable plugs straight into headunit as it seems a tad odd it has power if it’s disconnected at the front as well

Yes the CD cable plugs directly into the head unit. The changer would not do anything if the cable was not connected up front. Speaking of not connected, many head units have the NOT CONT error when a changer is connected, when the solder joint in the head unit is bad. Much discussion about that here in the past.

Very interesting to hear of an Alpine CD changer working in a X300 Jaguar (just not yours). Don't know how that happens.

It's pretty much self explanatory in that TSB that motorcarman posted. Issue with blocked Alpine changers only applies to cars after VIN 754304, earlier cars don't have that issue. There are also at least TWO revisions of AJ9500R with different board layout.

So the problem here is either you have a later AJ9500R radio or an issue with the radio/cable. All relatively easy to test if you have a spare car/radio/cable to test it with.

By the way, I have a working generic Alpine in my x300 exec.

The CD player was working in a 1995 and mines a 1997 so it could be blocked in my car ?

A-ha, I missed that VIN number, which does imply that 1995 model year radios will work with Alpine CDs. Good to know! Conversely, the 1996 and 1997 will not. Sorry, X300exec.
