CD stacker in trunk
Hi Guys, I've got an 94 XJ40 that's got a problem with the alpine CD unit in the trunk refusing to play most of my CD's. It played them fine in days gone by so it isn't an issue with the CD's themselves
The disks actually play when I first insert the magazine but after a stop, (engine/ign off) they often refuse to re-start and I get an E02 error. If I open up the trunk, remove the magazine and re-insert, the error message clears and they'll play again ... til next time
Anybody know if the unit from an X300 would be plug and play?
TIA
Larry

You might take a look at Jos Raven padmax. I've fixed one unit this way.

If you take it apart, you can see where the gears can jam.
There is a pdf posted around here that describes what to do.
At the same time, there is a plate that forms a ramp controlling
the up/down movement of the laser head. Lubricating this will
help things out.

Thanks, read the pdf this morning pre-posting, but transport/selectors seem to work just fine - at the moment I'm fairly sure the laser is worn - maybe even worn out as the fault is with the tracking!
A buddy of mine said E02 is a generic worn laser error condition that lots of CD players exhibit ... oh well!

Update - Tried following the .pdf but the stacker unit in the late XJ40 (and early X300 AFAIK) is a different Alpine unit to the example and doesn't seem to suffer from the same gear jam/alignment issue ...
However, cleaning the lens with isopropyl alcohol and lubricating the gears, shafts, head rails and all moving parts with white lithium grease has cured the problems and the CDs play normally once again.
So if anyone has the same issues, a good cleaning is certainly worth a try before resorting to eBay.
It even plays burned CD's without a hiccup, but it always did; I burn my CD's with an old XP machine burner - apparently old burners have stronger lasers and burn deeper? I know the disks burned with the Dell burner on my Win7 machine have a harder time in the car player.
