Default Urgent - car dead

Hey,
I was driving approx 40km/h when the car died, and it wont start. It turns over, but feels like there's no spark?

Replaced fuel filter, spark plugs and air filter last week, if that matters. Car is also converted to LPG, it was running on lpg when it died. It wont start on gas nor lpg though.

First thing I would suspect is the crankshaft position sensor. Watch the tach as you turn the engine over. Does it read about 200 RPM?

I dont think so...
I checked some other threads, and if understand this properly - if it shows 200rpm, you dont know really know if sensor needs replacing - it might, or it might now. But if needle doesn't move at all, it's 100% crank position sensor. Correct?

That is correct.

Also, by your signature, you are past that "magical" 100K mile mark, and for some alien reson these sensors go legs up anytime after that "magic" point, so a good bet in my opinion, and they are not expensive.

The electrical connector for that sensor is also a possible cause, it is vertically mounted, and general crud gets inside the plastic and CAN cause continuity issues.

Very little else on the X300 dies like that little item.

So I've ordered the sensor, and then I checked the car again - why does the sensor on my car look so much different from the one in the ad?

This is the one I bought: Jaguar XJ6 XJR X300 Crank Sensor LHE1640AA | eBay

This is the sensor, and it doesn't have a connector, instead I have to cut the wires? Is this normal?

The one on your car is someone's jury rig idea of a sensor, the one you ordered is the right one. My original went out at 80k when I went to change out the bracket to "Andy's bracket" it turned to dust. Having seen your picture of what's on your car I'm pretty sure it's your problem. Unfortunately it looks like someone's replaced the "plug" with wire splices.

I agree, that is not the correct part; looks more like a wheel speed sensor for abs, and not from an X300. Interesting that the car ran at all, and can't help thinking it will run better with the correct sensor fitted.

I would say the previous "repair" was made by a pretty good tinkerer! Mechanic? Not so much!

Well, hopefully, he did not have to drill out the hole.

If he did, you have a fabulous incentive to upgrade to an Andy bracket!

The guy that did that fix is worthy of a seat on the 'Pheonix'

....the one with Jimmy Stewart...not the remake!

WTFF???

The "F" appears here as the same basic word in both adjective and noun form.

What a hack! We should have a sticky where we can post real-life stories about how our cars were hacked while in the "careless owner(s)" phase of their history. Of course there would always be a restoration and happy ending to each story. I'm sure we would have many to share, unfortunately!
