Default Changing front caliper

I dropped off the car to have the belts and front pads changed. Im always afraid that I will get stuck npt able to push the caliper in, so I rather pay the shop a few bucks to do it.
Well they said the right side front caliper is stuck. I ordered a new one.

Will I be able to change it myself? New pads will go in with ease. All i have to do is remove the caliper and the brake line.
How is the brake line attached?

Will probably need to be bled anyway correct?

It should be pretty straightforward as long as nothing is seized. Make sure you can loosen the main caliper bolts and you have all the correct tools for the job. I had to rush out to get a 7mm (IIRC) allen bit the first time I did it.
You should be able to clamp the hose so you don't have to bleed the whole system, but fresh fluid all round wouldn't hurt.

Default Hex bits I needed for my job

Just replaced a front frozen caliper. I needed 1/4” hex bit to remove the old one, and 7mm to install the new one. Rock auto had a rebuilt for $50, without a core return, so that was nice. Used a “one man brake bleed kit” for the first

Magnet holds the bottle
time, worked great!

Depending on the last time your caliper was removed, and which part of the country you live in it might be easy or it might be a nightmare. Cars that drive in the snowy rust belt will have brake lines that are practically rust welded to the caliper and will probably round off the tubing nut so start soaking that with some penetrating oil and make sure you use the tightest fitting tube nut wrench (cant recall the name of the tool but its that closed end wrench with a small slot cut in it to slip over the brake line) you can find.

since your caliper is stuck, I’m gonna assume that you’re probably in one of those Rust Belt areas so be very careful with that brake line nut

might want to use some heat from a torch if it’s noticeably rusty. Get the nut super hot then let it cool back to room temp to expand and contract it to give the nut a chance to break its rust weld bond. Maybe a couple of hammer whacks to shock it. But that could be dangerous. Can you tell I used to live in the rust belt of new england? I used to round those nuts off like they were made of mud.

and make sure you bleed it well

Default Do NOT use ShoeGoo on brake boots!

Someone had put some kind of ShoeGoo stuff on the face and boot of both front brake calipers. On the frozen one, this glued the boot folds together and it pulled the boot off the caliper as the pads wore. This allowed water to rust the piston. Never saw this before!

My car has surprisingly little corrosion for Philly PA location. My car detailing friend is waiting for delivery of a washer-on-wheels for running under the car to spray wash the undercarriage. I need to see that.
