Tiny, we thrashed this out a little while ago. there will be some similar threads further down..https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ightly-101051/
I have followed the repeated part-change approach of our Australian member, who will no doubt post too.
Various sources on the net state total capacity for the ZF 4 speed as 7-10 litres. One ZF spec sheet I found said 7 litres.
I can drain about 3 1/2 litres out of mine, and I have done this 5-6 times in 7 months since buying the car. It changes much more smoothly now.
I use a synthetic ATF - I bought a 20 L drum for a good price.
the correct way of checking the gearbox fluid level is in the manual, and is quite specific - something like this: run the car at least 14 miles, the park on the flat with engine running. Put the lever in all gears then back in Park. Then check the level while still idling.
I find when I pull the dipstick out using this method it comes out dry, then when I re-insert and check again it is spot-on. Can't explain.. but it works.

I kind of thought that was a given, hence why I didn't mention it. lol But thank you for mentioning it anyway, in case I did actually forget.
