Default checking transmision fluid properly

The manual says 2 ways to check auto trans fluid- Yes warm & running but - it illustrates unbolting the tube and sliding it away from engine to check level and another illustration shows just to check where it is- - HELP?

I've not heard of the '...unbolting the tube...' thing.

Trans fluid expands quite a bit with heat which can confound the measuring. I prefer to check the level when HOT, not warm. A ten mile drive does the trick. With trans in "P" and engine running, car level, pull the stick, wipe it, reinsert, and pull it again. Add fluid if needed. That's it.

Because of the expansion thing transmission dipsticks, including yours, typically have a 'safe range' as well as Min and Max markings.....or similar nomenclature. However, I saw a TSB suggesting the fluid be topped off right to the full mark on the XJRs and V12s. I don't recall the rationale, if it was even stated.

Cheers

Since you have the Supercharged engine you have a different transmission then the other normally aspirated engine with the ZF4HP24 .

Yours is the GM transmission 4L80E

The manual says to loosen the bolt that mounts the transmission dipstick tube then slide it away to check the fluid level, which incidentally is right on the EGR exhaust manifold.... so it will be hot as Hades.

I always thought it was an odd procedure, but assumed it had to do with the routing of the tube and potential binding of the stick when removing and reinserting? But if that's the case, why even tighten it in its "stowed position" so that is up against the manifold? Who knows.... just seems strange. It only moves about an inch at most. Heck I wonder what the downside would be to just leave it away from the manifold permanently?

But yep, the XJR transmission is a GM 4L80E

Ahhhh.

My XJR didn't have the EGR.

Now it makes sense.
