Default Considering '95 XJ6

I posted this over in the early XJ8 forum - where I had been hanging out until my '99 XJ8 puked a tranny and wasn't worth repairing. Thought I would also post it here and see if there is any input. Thanks in advance.

Until about an hour ago, I gave this about a one percent chance of happening. Due to economic circumstances (which will last for about the next 90 days, but I need wheels now) at the present moment I have to buy a vehicle that I can pay cash for. I was looking at vehicles locally that are within my price range. Then I ran across this:

1995 Jaguar XJ6, good condition, AC and heater works.

I don't know any more than this. I am going to see the car tomorrow morning. It could almost pass for my late XJ8 - same body style, same color, although the wheels are different. In the photos the interior and paint look immaculate - which is more than I can say for my old car. If anyone can tell me anything about this vintage of XJ6 - especially whether they are prone to engine and transmission problems, and at what mileage they should be left alone - I will be grateful.

I've had both X300 and X308 in the past and would go for either again if I was after a four door.

Check this link to Doug Dwyer's Buyer's Guide in the FAQ's:

It may look the same as your old XJ8 but be prepared for just a little less 'get up and go'.

GGG: Great guide. Thanks for sharing it. I'm printing it off to carry along when I go to look at the car.

Orca, I have a '95 XJ6 and have been very pleased with it. I've had it about a year now and have changed out the battery, alternator, thermostat, had the brakes all replaced and a couple of other minor issued sorted. IMO, that's not too much in terms of maintenance for a then-17 year old car. This year I expect to pay less for maintenance.

If you find a car with good paint and a good interior, you're in better shape cost-wise since these costs are typically more than the occasional part replacement costs.

Good luck!
