Is this the oil drain plug?

Also, How would I get the filter out without getting oil on everything?

Sorry for picture quality

Yes, that's the oil drain plug.

Can't remove the filter without spilling some oil (easily washed off with aerosol brake cleaner) unless you let the car sit for a few hours so the oil has settled in the filter. Even then some might spill if you're not careful :-)

Cheers

if you unscrew the filter from the top and drop it just right it will land in the drain pan, but chances are it will catch and turn upside down and spill everywhere. if you have someone hold it on the bottom while you unscrew it from the top though you wont make a mess

Nah...just replace it......it's already like "pulling teeth" to get the wife to wash dishes.....

Seriously, though....I've not yet found a screw-on, cartridge type oil filter that doesn't come with the rubber gasket, though I suppose they exist. Everything I've seen lately, it is integrated and permanently affixed though I seem to recall some waaay back in the day that were just loose in the box.

I am able to unscrew the oil filter, turn it so the filter's mating end is up, and snake it up and out (versus lowering towards the ground). That way I am able to remove the filter without any oil dripping down.

Installation of the new filter is reverse of removal - guide filter (mating end up) down through hoses (left side of intake runners) ... I grab the filter with my right hand (routed on right side of intake runners) to screw it on.

On the XJR6 with the supercharged AJ16S engine:

It helps to TEMPORARILY remove the support brace between the engine block and the supercharger/intercooler assembly. Otherwise it is very difficult/impossible to remove the oil filter (at least on mine, which is a California emissions XJR6). I always reinstall the support brace after I replaced the oil filter.
