Default Crank sensor parts confusion

I have been reading a lot of posts about no-start caused by failing CKPS, but am confused by various names being used: Cam Position Senor; Crank Sensor, Engine Speed Sensor, Crankshaft Sensor; etc. Searching these names would lead one to two different parts LHE1640AA and DBC10603. Searching them by parts number would show that LHE1640AA is a sensor cable; DBC10603 is a mechanical part that Jaguar no longer produces any new parts, but there are many used parts being sold online, AND there is a repair kit for DBC10603 in the form of a mini-cable with associated small parts that insert into the "drum head", which is available in eBay and RockAuto. Can someone explain which is which and which one to replace for no-start due to CKPS failure?

Cam position sensor is a separate and distinctly different animal; failure of which will only delay a successful start, not prevent it.

As said.

Crank Angle Sensor on yours is mounted on a bracket at the front of the engine, and IF you were looking at the front of the engine (obviously the radiator and the rest of the car in the way), it would be in what we call the 10 O'clock position. That bracket is bolted to the timing cover, and this sensor is bolted to that bracket with a single socket head capscrew.

Some languages also call this item a "Crank Position Sensor", "Crank Speed Sensor",and there may be more names, but I know it as a CAS, Crank Angle Sensor.

The Cam Angle Sensor is that whizzy thing with a tin lid, with sight glass in it. It sits on the Front LH side corner of the engine block, and is in the way of actually SEEING that CAS from above. In an earlier life a "Distributor" lived where the Cam Angle Sensor now is, simple.

The part number for that CAS I used on mine is LHE1640AA, and a quick Google shows HEAPS available all over the world under that part number.

Your OTHER left, Grant... or in naval terms: the starboard side.

BUGGA only had 2 coffees.

RH, RIGHT HAND SIDE, is what I meant, but I know what I meant, its just the grey crap informing the wrong fingers.

ALSO forgot something else that I found on mine.

Follow the short wiring pigtail from that CAS to where it plugs into a connector. About 3" away. That connector is mounted VERTICAL, and is NOT sealed in any way. The years of crud coming through the radiator and blasting this thing, fills the open spaces, and then moisture gets in there, and DEAD car.

This connector is a fair mongrel to seperate, but when I got mine seperated, the oily gunk in there was scary. I washed it out with p/pack solvent, replugged it, and the engine fired straight up. I replaced that sensor coz I had one, but I needed to prove a point.

I did a Word doco on that years ago, but cannot find it.

Here is a snap I took of the connector once seperatd, and I am NOT a photographer in your wildest dreams, trust me.

When you get to it, you will note that the connector is a 4 wire affair, and only 2 wires are used, with the other 2 holes left open. I sealed these holes with RTV, thus making that connector water resistant a lot more than the original.

Just found a diagram featuring the AJI6 engine and showing various parts. Wish there were more similar pictures for dummies like me.

At the risk of being flippant, that info is in the owners handbook, which if you no got one, it is downloadable from the "stickies" at the TOP of the X300 (or any for that matter) section.

Getting at that CAS is a whole lot easier with the top radiator hose OFF, and the radiator fan pack out of the way (2 bollts and 2 electrical plugs).
