Default EMERGENCY! Please help. Rattle noise..

Hey guys,

96 XJ6 VDP 200K Miles.

I have read all about the starter and the damper noise... two questions though:

1 have a noise around the crankshaft pulley.
a: the water pump pulley can be turned by hand when the car is off and it turns the back pulley on the crankshaft as well as the alternator. I notice that the volt meter in the car shows about 11 when idling and 13 when at speed.
b: the noise is only at idle. when i rev above idle it goes away: that is when the volts go up as well.
c: I can move the back pulley of the crankshaft forward and back at the top and bottom. not sure that it should do that.

I was told when I bought the card that they had replaced the Damper. not sure they did, will find out to make sure.

So the question: could it be that the back pulley on the crankshaft is wobbling or rattling and making all that noise?

In a word or 2 or 3.

YES YES YES.

Sounds like they replaced it with a s/h unit and the rubber section has delaminated, and at 200k miles is not too bad, or you got conned and they simply patched it with some "glue" of some sort.

DO NOT drive it PLEASE, coz if that thing gets tangled up, and ***** over a tad it will take out the timing cover, crank angle sensor, and who knows what other items of British Engineering.
