Default Excessive Misfires: RESOLVED

I had this text exchange with one of my sons this morning:

I subsequently established that he'd fueled the car Monday afternoon and advised him I doubted it was due to fuel quality or we'd have likely seen the problem crop up on Tuesday.

When I got home, I moved the car up to the shop with a steady MiL, which began flashing as I went to idle in the shop. Misfires were noticeable throughout the drive, but moreso at idle. I recorded the following horror show:

I had 6 new Champions awaiting fitment to this car (96 VDP) when I got round to the cam-cover renewal. But cleaning/repainting of the cam-cover destined for it got pre-empted by failures/preventative maintenance on the 03 F-150/Excursion/05 S-Type/this 96 VDP(3 mo old b*st*d hose leak)/03 S-type. So it goes. I also had a string of 6 coils I got from the Pick-n-Pull yard some months ago - no notion of their functionality, as well as 3 I obtained for shipping cost here on the forum from the generous JTsmks (2 new Welsh, 1 used OEM Lucas) The box containing JT's 3 was the first I ran across, and corresponded to the # I needed, so I fit those.

I found only the #3 well full of oil, the other 5 all dry, but did see some budding cam cover corrosion in all plug-wells, despite exterior of the cover looking relatively pristine. So cam cover renewal needs to happen soon, because this is probably the best of the lot I have, and ultimately needs to be fit back to his car after a thorough cleaning and protective coating job.

In any case, I fit 6 new plugs, gapped to 0.038" and torqued to 23.95 NM, then fit JT's 3 coils in positions 2, 5, and 6. Cleared the codes, then fired up in the dark before I refit the coil cover and no light show, no MiL!

I refit everything, checked to insure I'd left no tools aboard, and took it for a quick 5-mile test hop. Smooth as.......and no roughness, no misses, no MiL.
Parked it back out front and told the lad he's good for school tomorrow. Don't know if it was plugs (removed NGK's - and they looked better when new, I'm sure) or coils or both. Will possibly attempt re-use of those coils one-at-a-time in future as I'm dubious all 3 would crap out at the same time.
