So after much deliberation I decided to sort my headliner out today ,had it out, recovered and refitted within three hours ,then I polished all my paint work and applied ceramic coating to protect it all ,all in all a good days work 👌🏻 Before I scrubbed the old foam and glue off Scrubbing in process Alcantara type suede effect material bonded on Refitted Finished Paint detailing Shiny !
Lower front seats as low as you can so they are almost flat ,remove all ancillary fittings from headliner so it’s drops onto seats open off side rear door and passenger front door carefully bend headliner board slightly along its length ,and carefully pull out of front passenger door ,don’t be scared of it it’s quite tough and if you bend it slowly it won’t snap ,refit by reversing removal procedure ,it’s not that difficult just be firm with it and take your time 👌🏻
The car is coming out of hibernation any day now and I plan to do this. Was thinking about waiting until Summer so the board would be least brittle, but you've inspired me.
According to last week's issue of a popular classic car newspaper (not magazine) it is a windscreen out job on the x300 models.
They said the same about the XJS but it is complete cobblers; old one out, new one in, 20 minutes.

True, I did my xj6 the same way. Be gentle but unafraid. It will work.
Will I get away with scrubbing away the old disintegrated foam backing and gluing the fabric straight to the board? Will it stain the fabric? Can you suggest a specific glue?
The old glue and foam will rub off with your fingers ,wear gloves tho ...
Hoover it off at least twice afterwards and if it’s still sticky and crumbly spray a coat of laquer over the whole board aurface and leave to dry to consolidate any areas that are still sticky
then spray trimbond adhesive on the board in six inch bands and the new material ,leave to dry for thirty seconds then carefully roll material onto board making sure it sticks to any moulded areas ,leave for an hour then trim edges and turn board over and glue all the edges down to the back of board ,then cut out all areas for roof fittings etc and refit
